march’s book / midnight in the garden of good and evie
Clue was one of my favorite board games as a kid. In fact, I still love the game, but my husband won’t play with me anymore because I am too competitive and always win. Oh well. If you loved Clue as a kid, this book is a perfectly light, fun and mysteriously delicious read.
Thomas Heyworth has just died. A reclusive, odd and very wealthy mystery writer with no heirs to leave his millions and his magnificent Mayhem Manor to, Thomas concocts a treasure hunt to determine the winner of his estate. He teams up people from his past, stages clues, and sets a time limit. Here’s a twist: Thomas was murdered. Just before he died, he knew who was going to make an attempt on his life; and as part of the game, he sends letters to the participants telling them the murderer will be revealed at the end of the game. More? One of the people playing along with them is the killer.
Meet the heroine and hero. Evie Randall, Thomas’s beloved charge, who was more like a daughter. Max Galloway, Thomas’s sulky and bull-headed stepson. Evie and Max don’t particularly care for each other. But Max, a policeman, wants the killer captured and order restored.
There are plenty of twists and turns in the book to keep your attention. Put on your detective cap. Can you figure out who done it?
Review by Kim Novak Proctor.
Mind mending? I give it three brain cell repairs out of five.
